Story
Beautiful day for a run along the inlet. Walked up on the bridge to get a good view of the rowers
Stop one on the Father’s Day Tough Tarmac Challenge brought me to Cass for an easy 5k. I slept poorly and started later than planned. Instead of starting with the Black Diamond Trail by headlamp I ran the Lakefront Loop first to make sure I’d be out of the way before the Peace Trot organizers started setting up. Cass was pleasantly breezy and cool at 5:30 and seemingly I had the whole Waterfront Trail to myself.
The Peter Demott Peace Trot at Cass Park. This is such a lovely inclusive fun race/run/walk/stroll/roll all for a good cause supporting the Catholic Workers. I ran the 5K as fast as I could this morning, falling a little short of my post high school PB of last year, when I was desperately trying to keep Liz Harman in my sights.
Still I was back in time to cheer as my 96 year old mother crossed the finish line of the 1 mile flanked by my brother, brother-in-law, and nephew. If you have sharp eyes, you might spot @Jamie pulling up behind them as he completed the 5K, after several weeks off nursing a sore knee.
Shortly afterwards my sister and her son Oliver, in a very heavy wheelchair, triumphantly finished the 5K together.
Ospreys!
There were ospreys perched in both of the nest! Quite nice to see them there, especially since I am usually running this course in the dark.
This is my 3rd Tough Tarmac Challenge course and it has been cloudy most of the day, but the clouds are beginning to darken slightly and I have two courses to go yet!
I decided today to put a nice long run in before heading to NYC for the weekend:) I live in Lansing, so I ran 7.5 miles to Cass park for the 5k. I completed the 5k in 19:34, I felt pretty good about that, after running 7.5 miles there at a decent pace. After, I completed the run by jogging over to Chipotle for lunch.
I was happy to get exactly 13.1 miles of running in, but I should have put more miles toward the challenge:)
Hit the Lakefront Loops 5K course this morning. It was warm and humid. I ran a few extra tenths at the end but decided not to push it. I saw an ambulance out near the dog park when I was on the Treman Lake Park Loop, so I hope all is okay.
Runners, stay safe during this heat!!
Ran Lakefront Loops 5K today in my favorite direction, out and back along 89 to the path along the inlet then out to the Treman loop. It was muggy!!
After logging a couple of Sweet 1600s in Tburg, I headed down the hill through the fog for a Lakefront Loops 5K. While on the course, I let my mind wander to the Ultra Challenges and couldn’t fathom running a 50K or 100K … especially in this warm, humid weather.
A repeat of last week … after a couple of miles on the Tburg track, I headed to Cass for a 5K. On my drive down, I realized that I should plan to hit the new Sweetgum 1600 one morning.
I decided to shake things up a bit (for me) and run the Treman Loop first, but I should have thought it through a little bit as I ended up running a little extra.
After a couple miles on the track, I headed down to Cass Park for a 5K. I noticed my left heel was a little sore but went on my not so merry way.
It was warm and sticky. At 2.25 miles, I wanted to quit, not walk, just sit down and call it done. Unfortunately/fortunately, my car was parked near the start/finish, so I’d have to get to the finish one way or another.
I didn’t stop, didn’t walk, just kept chugging along to the finish.
BUT …. my heel was SUPER ANGRY when walked a cooldown. And now I am scared. It took 8 months to rehab my right foot when I had plantar fascia-whatever.
My foot felt better throughout the day, but I’ll plan to take a break from running and see how it does.
I’ll be able to hike the last two long trail courses, and I’m hoping to get one done this week when the temperature drops.
I had a tough workout this morning with 3 x 4K at MP + 1K faster with 4 min rest between reps. Decided I’d run it on the Lakefront course, three laps around. The last one was pretty tough but I persevered. My hamstrings seem mostly okay. ![]()
Ran the Remembrance Run for HOPE 5K at Long Branch Park in Liverpool this morning. I was humming along in 2nd place until I missed a turn, adding an additional quarter mile or so to the course. So a 20:25ish effort goes in the books as 21:53. Incidentally, some members of the lead pack missed a different turn early in the race and ran an additional half mile after getting turned around.
I was in Lancaster County, PA over the weekend visiting in-laws and I found out there was a 5K on the nearby Enola Low Grade Rail Trail. There was a cash prize for overall winners so I thought I might be able to take home something for my effort.
After everyone finished sprinting off the start line a lead pack of three emerged: myself and two teenagers. We hit mile 1 in 5:42 and I felt pretty good, but the other guys looked really comfortable as well.
As soon as we hit the turnaround at halfway one of the other guys threw down a sustained surge. I should have been able to match his move, but for some reason I was really struggling to keep up.
A gap was forming ahead of me. I watched it grow slowly and steadily as I tried to will my legs to go faster. The 3rd man in our group was losing even more ground so I was alone in 2nd. Mile 2 went by in 5:41, and by that time the race was practically over. The leader was too far ahead to catch. I tried my best to stay within kicking range but all I could muster for mile 3 was a 5:46. I finished in 17:46 behind the winner who ran 17:30.
Only two months ago I ran 16:30 at Twilight, so it was very frustrating to lose a 17:30 race. Oh well, on to the next one. Props to the other guy for running a great race!
After a week off of running and minimal pain in my left hoof (my husband was watching
hoof trimming videos last night, so hoof is on the brain!!), I decided to test it out on the Lakefront Loops. AQI was a little concerning, thus I took it easy. My hoof felt fine and has continued to do so throughout the day!
I’ve been missing my “2 a days” and thought maybe I could get a 1600 and 5K in this morning. No such luck, so I headed to Cass for the 5K.
I was angry and disappointed by something (in the grand scheme of things, not a big deal at all) which fueled my fastest time on this course this year.
I ran another hot and sweaty lunchtime Lakefront Loop today. Toward the end I was sweating so hard that sunscreen ran into my eyes, limiting visibility with that wonderful sting. At the same time I approached a lone banana on the sidewalk, laid out like like a Mario Kart trap, and got ready to cue the Bob Saget voiceover commentary. (Yes, I obviously grew up in the 90s.). I managed to outmaneuver the offending food scrap and remain upright all the way back to Island, where I rinsed my eyes out in the shower. We’ll call it a victory, but also bad karma for donning an old TCRC singlet from my Binghamton road running days.
I’d also like to formally concede that Lakefront Loops sign to @patrickmilano. My visions of grandeur will not come to fruition when it comes to taking that one home at the picnic ![]()
