I’m still working on the permissions we need from Cornell to use the track at Barton Hall for our workouts, so we’ll try something new until permissions come through.
Meet downstairs on the west side of Barton Hall (facing the Statler) at 6 PM. This is the same place we were meeting last winter for track workouts. We’re just using it as a meeting point, and I don’t recommend leaving clothes or water bottles in Barton, so come ready to run. We’ll do our warmups inside and then head out.
As for the actual workout, I’m playing it a little by ear because we’ll have to see what the lighting is like on the Arts Quad, probably roughly 800m repeats around the Arts Quad. It won’t be too hard since we just raced on Sunday and have another race this Sunday.
@adamengst keep in mind that we can’t just run the perimeter because the area around McGraw Hall is blocked off for construction. The interior paths, especially under the trees, are not lit the best.
I was afraid of that, and was figuring we’d see how dark it really seems for the interior paths or potentially going out to the path along the top of Libe Slope. It’s all paved, so footing shouldn’t be an issue.
Big thanks to @cpetroff for scouting a route on the Arts Quad for us that avoids all the construction. We’ll do this at least once as a warmup before going faster.
Hi Adam:
Apart from the Hammond Hill trail group run a couple weeks ago, I have yet to meet up with FLRC friends to run with. I’m trying to get three runs a week in and wanted to ask you (Heather told me to reach out to you on this question) is am I able to attend the Barton workouts, I thought this was Mondays at 7:30pm, confused now about it being on Tuesdays at 6? It says we should be able to run 15-20 miles weekly but I don’t think I’m quite doing that much. Close to 15 if I run three times a week but sometimes get only two runs in. She says to ask you if it is ok that I attend. Obviously I’d like to avoid injury and have been running since around May. I’ve run before but had chronic case of plantar fasciitis years ago that stopped me from being able to run. I’m a 4-time diving Olympian and past Cornell diving coach and for the past 4 years (this year starts my 5th) SUNY Cortland diving coach. I know diving does not exactly transfer to running, lol, but being an Olympian puts me in a different category than “regular folk”. In my 20’s my fastest 5k race time was 20:21. Now-a-days, my goal is to better my time from my last 5k which was 17 years ago at just under 30. Aging has its realities. I’d like to stay healthy and uninjured and I’m having a right shoulder surgery (torn labrum and rotator cuff ligaments from years of wear and tear in diving-I’m also a Masters World Champion most recently in Singapore in August) in December 11th, so not sure when I’ll be able to return to running after that surgery. Do you think I could come and watch what the workouts entail? And please clarify the days & times for me? Thanks!
The Tuesday night indoor workouts, once they settle down, will be at 7:30 at Barton Hall. As I noted earlier this week, I’m still working on permissions with Cornell. I hope that we’ll be able to start indoors on 11/11, but I can’t promise at the moment—it depends on getting final approvals today.
If you’re getting in a couple of runs per week, that should be fine, although you should double-check with me about each workout if the range of interval distances/times isn’t clear. I always design the workouts to work for a wide variety of paces and abilities. You’re certainly welcome to come watch if that’s where you want to start.
We’ll be taking off from the second week of December until the first week in January because Barton is closed for finals and then break, so you can revisit the topic in January once you know how your shoulder is recovering from the surgery.
