Abbott Ascent Star Posts

Story

Finished off the 2025 Challenge with a beautiful yet stupid hilly course. Next week is predicting rain, so I wanted to get as dry a course as possible. Linda (the name I use for ally GPS devices) the watch was not behaving and did not record the first 0.75 of distance (but did record the elapsed time). RunGo Linda was also jumping around and giving me way more mileage than I covered. Who know how much I actually did!!

Saw 23 red efts, including 3 of the smallest efts I can ever recall seeing. A stop at the Pinnacles, and then a sprinkly last 2 miles to the finish.

Matt and I decided to spontaneously hike (what I consider) the hardest course this year.
So much vert. But very lovely.

It was very humid but we had lots of water & electrolytes :slightly_smiling_face: it was nice to not have to slog through the mud like I had to in the spring :+1:

Well, I had some choice words for Mr. Abbott as I slogged along this seemingly endless loop. “Why,” I wondered, “would anyone ever choose to traverse this route if they didn’t have to as part of a race?!”

The first half mile or so was pretty overgrown (no mud though!)

I did spot multiple snakes enjoying the dry summer sun.

The trail was pretty well-marked and didn’t cross other blazes, which made it hard to get lost. (I’m trying to come up with nice things to say here).

Most of the creeks were fully dried up, but in true Labrador fashion, Charlie found a spot to cool off. I actually planned to run this tomorrow, but I when I saw all the rain in the forecast, I made it happen today.

I guess it was “pretty” seeing all those ferns. But can you tell that slope is a killer?!

Obligatory photo op of Charlie with Charlie’s Bridge.

Quick snack break at the Pinnacles

All that descent at the end was super technical. I’m honestly amazed I didn’t go flying. I guess the fear of a broken ankle miles from civilization and cell phone reception kept me on my toes (lol).

Saw the first fall colors on the way down.

I stopped by the roadside stand at Dolce Delight for a stunning bouquet of sunflowers as my consolation prize for making it through.

Nice cool morning definitely helped make all the climbing more bearable. Glad to have @KimJ and @Sandy for company!

Well that was adventurous….

Over the last week I’ve been gone camping in the ADK, and haven’t been able to get to the final Challenge courses. Of course the day I get back, portions of the Danby State Forest, receive almost 2.5 inches of rain! Still with only a week to go I had to tackle Abbott Ascent. When I arrived I noticed they it had again rained previously in the day, not heavy, but still making everything wet. After some stretching and warm ups, I was off. The first 2 miles actually felt really good, with both miles around the 8ish minute mark. When I got to the merge around the 2.5 mile mark, I had a hard time deciding which way to go, after a couple wrong turns, and a few glances at the map I eventually found the trail. The brush was so grown up you could barely tell there was a trail! Unfortunately, in the progress, I lost around a minute of time. Shortly after I got back on track, I developed a really bad cramp:/ I rarely get cramps, so I was surprised, and that slowed the pace for a bit, until it subsided. At this point I was feeling pretty down, but my time wasn’t terrible, just slightly under my projected time. Going towards mile 4, I had to cross over the usually dried up stream getting onto the road, however it wasn’t dry. :joy: The stream was probably 18 inches deep, getting completely soaked shoes in the process, hey what’s a trail run without water! As I slopped onto Michigan Hollow road, I unfortunately missed the turn to get back on the trail. Again it was so dense, you could barely see it! After another roughly minute delay, I was back on track. The most treacherous part of this run, was running through the valley, right along the stream. Everything was soaked, with puddles everywhere, making it a

nightmare with footing. I probably slipped throughout the run at least a couple dozen times, however I fortunately never fell once! Once I arrived at the overlook, I got a little bit more of a boost, with only two miles to go! The last couple of miles were pretty uneventful, except for a bunch of slipping, and one wrong turn:/ I finished in a time of 1:11:40, I felt pretty good about this, with all the challenges I was up against! Unfortunately, the sloppy terrain, and multiple wrong turns definitely tacked on a few extra minutes. However, that’s the FLRC Challenge for you! One course to go:)

To paraphrase Jack Kerouac:

Down in Danby,
Down in Danby,
All I did was die

I finished North Country and already felt trashed. I made a quick stop at the nearest Speedway for Chex Mix and some icy Mountain Dew, then drove down to Michigan Hollow Road for a round of hilly, technical misery. I do like this loop, just not when I’m exhausted and ready to go home.

I didn’t realize until getting back into 5G civilization and checking the Leaderboard activity log that @dennis-s was out here when I was, deep into another 100k attempt.

The Abbott trails were as dry as they’ve ever been, though I was surprised by how overgrown some parts are. My legs no longer like to work on big ascents so most of the hills were walking pace. Good thing there’s only 1,800 feet of vert on the loop

I finally found myself running hard on the last half-mile downhill until I ate it 200 meters from the sign. I landed on my side and wrenched my left should, which I injured last April and is taking forever to heal because I keep doing stupid stuff like tripping on trails. I did my best to ignore it until after scanning the finish sign.

Tough Trail done. Turns out my shoulder is probably fine. I managed to beat Stephen’s run time by a whopping 4 minutes, but really just glad to have finished it. Tomorrow morning I’ll be rewarded by getting to run the Groton Labor Day 5k with my 5-year-old son.

@adamengst I only ran Abbott once today but my effort is duplicated on the Leaderboard. Could you or @steve-desmond correct it? It only shows once on the Webscorer app on my end. I can’t figure out how to delete the extra myself.

Only I can do that, and I’ve done so. There must have been a weird communication error that caused it to be sent twice to the server. Not surprising, given the connectivity out there.
