Final call for FLRC’s Sunset Circuits track meet at Ithaca High School on June 30

Don’t delay, register today for tomorrow’s Sunset Circuits evening meet at Ithaca High School (6/30 at 6 PM). It’s a great opportunity for FLRC Challenge runners to record a fast Sweet 1600.

Check the meet page for all the details, but here are the key bits:

  • Registration: There is no registration at the meet, so make sure to sign up soon. Registration closes at noon on Tuesday. Please follow the instructions on how to enter seed times correctly. Reply here or email me at ace@tidbits.com if you have questions. Also, contact me if you need a new club or school team added to the menu.
  • Events: The Sunset Circuits events will be the 100m, 1600m, 200m, 400m, in that order, plus the long jump, high jump, shot put, and discus throughout (thanks to the SOAR Running Club and the Groton Project for managing the field events). We’ll also have a 4x200m relay that you’ll sign up for at the meet.
  • New to track? If you’ve never run a track meet before, or never run one of ours, check out our First-Timer’s FAQ for Track Meets. If you have additional questions, just ask!

Looking forward to seeing you at the Ithaca High School track tomorrow!

With temps forecast to be near 90F by evening tomorrow, what are the odds that this is getting canceled or postponed?

Not high based on temperature. Our Event Cancellation Policy uses wet bulb temperatures, and we’d modify or cancel the event only if it was 82º WBGT.

Also see our infographic:

The WBGT forecast for tomorrow evening is 76º, which is high, but not to the point of cancellation. Our guidelines suggest:

Recommend participants at increased risk for heat collapse withdraw from race and others slow pace to match conditions, provide extra water, acquire ice, alert volunteers to watch for signs of heat collapse

Plus, it’s a track meet, so the longest anyone will be running at once is a slow 1600m—likely no more than 10 minutes. The 100m, 200m, and 400m just don’t take long enough for heat to pose a serious problem for most people.

The more serious concern is that there could be thunderstorms moving through, and if there’s lightning, we’d have to delay or cancel. We can’t know that until we’re there, though.
