Time is running out to sign up for the 2025 Forest Frolic 7K and 15K trail races on July 27! The classic Forest Frolic trail races take place on the beautiful singletrack trails through Kennedy State Forest in Virgil, NY.
The 15K starts at 9 AM, followed by the 7K at 9:15 AM. Please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the start time to pick up your bib.
Both races wind through shady woods with several stream crossings. The 7K (4.1 miles) is a loop with 700 feet of climb and lots of runnable flat stretches. The 15K (9 miles) is a figure eight that includes the 7K loop, has 1,700 feet of overall climb, and a “choose your own adventure” component that lets you choose which way you run the loop. You can run the loop counterclockwise with a shorter, steeper uphill to start or clockwise with a longer, more gradual uphill🙂. Either way, you end up at the highest point in the entire county.
Both courses feature the famous “rock pile” and end with a fast half-mile finish down a flat logging road. Afterward, grab some beverages and watermelon and stick around to cheer your fellow runners into the finish!
Both distances are part of the FLRC Trail Circuit, and our leaderboard will be updated after the race.
Because Frolic is a bit of a drive with limited parking, we suggest carpooling, and we’ve set up a handy-dandy carpool sign-up.
Please register before 6 PM on Friday night to make things easier on our volunteers, especially race directors @tpdady and @me.runalot. Register now and get ready to frolic through the forest on July 27!
Looks like all of the volunteer jobs are full. I can get there early and help with set-up and I will probably be the last finisher. So I can help with cleanup.
@StephanieR I can give you a ride, and ideally you are on the east side of Ithaca since I am near Stewart Park. I am bringing my 4-legged running companion and will do the 15K at my slow pace so you may wish to hear from others before choosing your chauffeur.
Due to circumstances, we will not have portajohns available tomorrow. Please keep this in mind as you come to the race. There are plenty of woods but please go into the woods.
You may park on the right (south) side of Hauck Hill Rd towards the start line. Please pull over so emergency vehicles could pass. Also, this .4 mile section is the finish run in for both races.
Registration will be at the start line - the primitive camping area on Hauck Hill Rd. Bib pickup starts after 7:30 am. Cell service is spotty in these woods.
There will be two water stops on the 15 k course and one in the 7k we will also have water at the start line plus refreshments when you finish. The trails are fairly dry today - we’ll see if we get rain overnight. We will have pop up tents to stow gear under if it rains.
