The scenery in this gorge is beautiful and the trails are easy going. This is also where my day ended.

I pulled into the lot and slogged through half of the Mulholland route before it was bright enough to turn off the headlamp. I finished feeling okay but not great. Two more to go for the Tough Trail Challenge.

On the drive over to the penultimate stop, Fall Creek Trails, the fatigue hit me like a brick to the face. I got to the arboretum around 6:30 to find both gates closed to traffic, which meant parking near Flat Rock and jogging to find the Challenge sign.

This was when I decided to end it. I was struggling to stay away at the wheel and it was getting too dangerous. I was afraid of passing out while driving so r while running and it wasn’t work the risk. If I had the full 12 hours available, I would have just parked, napped, and been okay to finish the final two courses. But I promised to be home by 8:00, so I called it a day and went home after 3 courses and 23.8 miles. There’s plenty more days ahead to attempt the Ultra Challenges.

After being teased with your three early morning completions, I was worried you might have incurred an injury when I didn’t see any more course times posted late morning. Good to hear you’re fine!

Yeah, that was my worry too. Glad it was just fatigue!

To follow up, I think I was sick or something but I don’t know exactly with what. I slept a ton on Saturday, felt like I’d been run over by a truck, and was too exhausted to even be functional. Sunday morning was the same but it got better in the afternoon. I’ve never felt so awful the day after a run except for last year’s Tough Trail Challenge when I got Covid and was probably running around Hammond with Covid and didn’t know it. I’ll give this another attempt sometime to determine if I’m cursed.

A great mid-day run on the trails. They were surprisingly dry after all the rain Saturday. Not many wildflowers out yet but did enjoy beautiful scenery and several bird sightings.

What better way to celebrate Earth Day than to be out on trail surrounded by its beauty? This was also my first Challenge course of 2025 so I’m easing in with one of the short courses. I found the trails to be dry and easy to navigate. There were quite a few people out enjoying the warm spring day: some with their dogs, some fishing in the creek, others sitting at the overlook enjoying the view. Happy Earth Day.

Spectacular!
My first time here and it is amazing! On an earlier year Challenge, I could hear folks having fun in the creek from the South Hill Rec Way trails above, but never imagined it was like this! Quite a scenic little gem tucked in there!

So this year I’m attempting perhaps the most difficult challenge of all - completing as many courses as possible with a 4-year-old and 7-year-old in tow. They’re doing personal challenges of course, and we hiked this one in about 2:30, while picking up litter along the way. Both kids did a great job, with only some minor whining at the turnaround. Much time was spent throwing rocks into the creek and starting at waterfalls.

I hadn’t been here in years and forgot how nice it is, especially in spring. We even saw a red newt. I’ll have to go back to properly run it.

Mulholland was the second run of the day. The rain had stopped by then and we even saw the sun peeking through the clouds. There are white trillium blooming now. And, we enjoyed the dam view.

Hiked this as my third course a week or so ago. I had never actually been near the “dams” before — such exposure! I did not want to trip on a root there. Fun trails, hadn’t been out here in a while. We used to take the kids here when they were little because you got a lot of bang for the buck. (Short and flat and lots of pretty.)

The challenge sign is gone! We searched a little bit couldn’t see it  Easy enough to run without scanning thankfully. And such a pretty course I decided to go round twice this morning - first with my running buddies @melissawallace and @chillenb, and second mostly solo. I think I’ll be back, probably to dunk in the water this summer :sun_with_face:

Second go on this course, running this time, fun with friends! Much quieter on a Thursday at 7am vs Easter Sunday afternoon.

Boo! That’s only the second time a Challenge sign has disappeared in five years. I’ll make a new one for Saturday’s group run.

I need to get some trail miles on/under my feet. I really wanted to give the Lansing Cliffs course a go, but I decided to be responsible (for once) and hit the shorter course closer to work.

I’m a bit behind on the forum, so I spent more time than I should have looking for the course sign that is currently missing. First time out this season with Run Go Rachel. She had a hard time keeping up with me at the beginning and end of the run but seemed to be on track in the middle.

This was a beautiful course, and I hope to get out on it several more times!

This is my home course - one I run weekly at least - so it was fun to get “points” for it

The creek is incredibly full, which is both beautiful and extra fun for my water dog.

After completing the entire course, we went home up through the switchbacks, which were gloriously green.

I wasn’t planning on running today, but I got tired of work around 3:00 so I decided to squeeze this in before an event this evening.

I figured I had time for a double, but within half a mile realized I was too drained for 2 faster loops, so I ended up calling it at the end of #1.

Definitely going to try it backwards next time, I’m thinking the early hard uphill and longer rolling down will result in a better time. Plus, maybe actually warming up before going out hard?

I went out this morning and boy was it muddy! Be forewarned to wear your trail shoes (mine were still soaked from yesterday, so I sacrificed my new sneakers). Evidence of someone sliding down the hill (below)

We started at the top today, since we live up there, and a quarter mile in, Charlie remembered where she stashed her precious deer leg from the winter.

The course is quite flooded right now — I’d recommend holding off until the ground can absorb some of the rain unless you want to be soaked in mud.

Seeing the trilliums in abundance makes me so happy! When I was a kid, they were endangered, but preserves like Mulholland have helped them come back!

Will be back to soak up the wildflowers and hopefully less mud soon!
