Recommended first marathon? Anyone done Jim Thorpe?

Hello marathoners! I am hoping you will share your experience to help me choose a first marathon.

I’m looking for a race in the second half of April (weekend of the 19th or 26th) that is not too far away, and not too hilly. Jim Thorpe looks smaller, really picturesque and it’s a downhill course. The only disadvantage is the average temperature is 57, a bit too warm. Just over 20% of finishers BQ.

Has anyone done this race? Want to do it? Any thoughts on a first marathon? Tips?

That’s exciting, Dirk. Good for you! I looked at the Jim Thorpe race a while back (the half, not the full), but decided on the Two Rivers half in Lackawaxen, PA on March 30. That event has a marathon option, as well. Can’t yet recommend, as it’ll be a first for me. Hope you find a race that works for you!

My first, second, third marathons were all at the Wineglass. Happy to chat about my experiences.

Would love to chat. Jim Thorpe is gravel, and not as flat as that picture suggests, so I’m open to other options.

Dirk:
Tips for first marathons? Whole books have been written on the subject, and lots of websites as well…but fwiw, here are my best suggestions:

  • set a reasonable goal, like finishing in a good mood and not sustaining an injury in the process
  • find a training program that works for you (there are lots of them available, depending on starting level of fitness and goals) and stick with it
  • learn what nutrition (bars, chews, gels, drinks or mix thereof) works for you - it will take some experimentation during training
  • get a good pair of shoes!
  • and mostly - enjoy the ride (so to speak)
