The Electrical Box Art Quest is happening this Saturday!

The inaugural Electrical Box Art Quest is happening this Saturday, April 11, at 8:00am, in Ithaca, NY. This event blends the fun of a (guided) scavenger hunt with the camaraderie and casual nature of a group run as you explore painted electrical boxes (and murals) around the city. The weather is looking favorable for early April—no rain and sunshine will make an appearance!

Register

Everyone will start together at Thompson Park on N Cayuga St. at 8:00am. Using provided turn-by-turn directions or a downloadable .gpx route, you’ll navigate your way to 30–70 painted electrical boxes. Choose your quest distance to suit your challenge level: 10K (160ft elevation), 11-mile (with two elevation choices—490ft or 800ft), and 14.5-mile (950ft elevation). If you’re out on your quest and feeling spicy, power up to a longer distance! If you’ve had your fill of art and want to end early, drop down.

Registration is $15 for a finisher’s patch (with $5 supporting Ithaca Murals) or free with the option to donate separately. There are no aid stations, but plenty of places along the way to grab food or drinks, and free all-day parking is available at the start/finish. Afterward, everyone is invited to celebrate at a local brewery. This event is a great way to usher winter out the door, appreciate local public art, and get moving with friends!

Thanks for running with us in spirit, Bob!

I had a great time running the 11 mile route around downtown. The written directions were great and I was able to locate all the boxes I looked for. I felt like I was on a true quest of self-discovery trying to interpret all of the murals.

Thanks for doing this Heather and FLRC!

We love our 14.5-mile route and found all the boxes successfully. It felt like visiting a giant art exhibition! It is also a perfect time to explore the town: the weather is getting warmer, people are coming out of their houses (so are the other little animals!) and the flowers are starting to bloom. The whole town is coming alive again. SUPER FUN!

Clever idea and execution, and kudos to Heather and FLRC for putting this together! My 4-legged companion and I did the 11m route and saw some clever box designs. My favorite was the one in collegetown depicting the Royal Palms Tavern.
