Treman Trailipop Star Posts

One of my favorite Melissa @mplank posts this year is the Indiana Jones meme regarding the stairs on the Treman Trailipop course. Now, every time I run this course, I think of that as I enter the service road, knowing Melissa’s stairs are just ahead, and I laugh to myself. :sunglasses: So, here is the beginning of their ascent to the sky. Enjoy, Melissa!

On 7/7, the 7.7 miles of Treman Trailipop completed my Tough Trail Challenge in less than 7.7 hours run time. My stop at Dennis’s for ice cream is also the 7th different ice cream stand I have hit since the first Challenge in 2021 - Frosty Cow, Purity, Toad’s, Dryden Creamery, Cornell Dairy Bar, Ice Cream Bar (formerly Not My Dad’s), and Dennis’s. Are there others near the Challenge Courses that I missed?

Scouting report

Not sure any group runners will read this in time … this morning (Saturday) I started the course about an hour later than the group will tomorrow. The short stretch of trail between the railroad tracks and to where it goes into the forested area was greasy. The bugs weren’t too bad, but bug spray would be helpful. The road section was toasty. I drank 1.5 liters of water on the course and more after, but I sweat a lot and don’t like heat and humidity.

Yet again, I worked a Challenge Course around my kid’s schedule. My kid has a sports camp at Cornell this weekend, and we are carpooling with a neighbor. After checking the weather (and also realizing that I probably wouldn’t be able to make the Sunday group run on time), I opted to hit the Treman Trailipop course this morning.

It took me awhile in my AC’d car to get myself organized. It turns out I forgot my running belt, but I did have my hydration vest (which I haven’t used in a while) to tuck my keys. I figured I would need easy access to my phone because Rachel and I have trust issues, so I tucked it into a zippered pocket in my shorts. Eventually, I was off. With the shape I am in, lack of time on trail, and heat, I planned to hike the majority of the course and slowly run the flatter parts.

I still don’t like crossing the railroad bridge. Once I reached the other side, I told myself that I should run through the creek on my way back. When Rachel told me ‘you’re welcome’ for not having to go up the switch backs, I snorted … I knew there was plenty of elevation to climb regardless. Phew the climb!

I cussed out loud at the bottom of those stairs on the Lake Treman Trail. I told Rachel she was killjoy for telling me to turn left instead of right down to Buttermilk. Do you ever have a negative response (or less than positive response) when someone offers you words of encouragement? Someone told me I was almost to the top (of a short hill), but all I could respond with was something about the almost 4 miles I had left …

A combination of distraction and wearing sunglasses in a shady area contributed to me kicking a tree root really hard. I must have upset the tree root because it took me DOWN, hard. My hands braces my fall a little bit, but my whole left side was covered in dirt. I was surprised that the emergency feature on my Garmin was activated, but I was able to shut it off.

Needless to say, the tumble shook my confidence about moving quickly down the steeper parts of the trail.

I did run through the creek instead of crossing the railroad bridge, and it felt great. Course complete!! I then soaked my feet in the water under the 13 bridge.

Please don’t sell this feet pic!! :joy:

If you are going to spend a week driving and hiking around Eastern Canada and the US then this is not a recommended easy first run back. There that one hill at the start. It’s a bit tough. That said, I loved this course. I give it a 10/10.

I ran this course for the first time last weekend, and I didn’t love it. Too much hill and too hot, and the tall grass on the power line up to King Road seemed like tick heaven (spoiler - that grass is now cut) (weirdly, I haven’t found a tick on me all year so far).

As it turned out, I was back at the Lick Brook parking lot at 10am this morning to meet up with some friends to do it all over again. I saw @veritymo finishing her Challenge run right after I pulled in, and heard that @Tristan_Lambert was on the course, but I never saw him.

@jennarice had never seen Lick Brook before, and it was fun to experience it through her eyes, and to notice the smells and sights of the full green-ness of summer.

Maybe the humidity was lower today, but I felt more comfortable throughout the run than I had last week, and I liked the course much more. It is easy to take for granted our fabulous waterfalls and lovely landscapes, and I spent more time taking in the scenery and less time noticing that I was hot. The power line cut up to King Road was mowed very low, making for an easier ascent.

I took the scenic route home, driving up Sandbank and then east on King Road, and allowing a little extra time to enjoy the view before tackling my weekend chores.

@lahelmerick and I tackled Treman Trailipop this morning. The weather was perfect for our 7 miles, only 6 of which felt uphill! It was a pretty course and I was glad to find another new-to-me spot to run.

Simon finished his 8-course personal challenge on this beautiful cool morning! @IanWoods and I did Treman Trailipop with him. All went smoothly, with the only hiccups being that as soon as we stepped on the railroad bridge, we saw an oncoming train and had to back off and wait for it to pass, and things were a bit thorny on the trail between the two grassy segments. Technically I’m done with all 10 courses now too… but I don’t feel like I’m actually done with the challenge until I run all the courses once without Simon. I need to run this one and HHH without him, then I’ll be done! (And if I can manage to re-run Rabbit Run too, then I’ll have completed all 10 courses at least 2x.) The challenge now is finding the time to do them this week before time’s up!

Today was an amazing morning for a run/hike
I parked at the Trailipop at buttermilk, started the self time, then ran around the lake and back to the car. Grabbed my trekking poles (bc I know I would have fallen trying to run down the hill without them and would need them going back up)
The dark overcast skies and slight breeze made my heart soar for my deep love of :maple_leaf::fallen_leaf: weather :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
I ran down most of the way to the sign, switched to a hiking activity, tapped the FLRC sign with my trekking pole and started back to the climb.
By the time I was on yaple Rd the wind chilled me with my sweat covered clothes. Thankfully I did tie my long sleeve shirt to my run vest, so took some time to put that back on and was very glad I had the forethought for that  and made it back to the car without catching a chill
I plan to be back again on Monday for more climbing :sweat_smile: this was still my fastest attempt
