Greetings runners. After the lovely but wet Turkey Trot, I realized that I could use a waterproof or water resistant jacket. And since my husband needs gift ideas …
Specifically, I “think” I’m looking for a shell because I should be able to layer appropriately. It MUST be breathable as I run hot and sweat a lot.
It may not fit every water situation but I really like the Patagonia Houdini. It packs really small and it does a nice job making you feel protected from water and wind. It isn’t warm just a layer of some resistance. Water goes through but it feels like a good barrier and breathes well. Finger Lakes Running Company had them in summer and should still have them.
I bought a Janji Rainrunner in April and have been wearing it often for both rain and dry cold. I highly recommend, keeps you amazingly dry but is still breathable. the MSRP is $200 but worth it.
I got the Janji rain runner on sale at Ian’s store a little while back and can confirm that it’s kept me dry in a steady rain and also it is pretty breathable for a rain jacket.
I use the Houdini too but more often for wind and a light mist, as it’s not waterproof. Sometimes it is not breathable enough for me, though.
I get a lot of gear from backcountry.com they do a lot of reselling so it’s a great place to get very expensive high quality brands for less and they have tons of clothes for every kind of weather etc. I got an excellent frigid temps winter run jacket there two years ago that’s been perfect.
Whenever I am out in rainy conditions, I’ll wear my Houdini (I was just in Ian’s shop last week and he had a size small and extra small Houdini pullover in a fun colorblock on clearance). I find that the jackets fit well and are breathable, which keeps me comfortable, as I also tend to run pretty hot. Just last week I wore mine in the rain and in the snow.
