Hi everyone,
I’m a rising junior at Cornell, originally from Afghanistan. I serve as an Afghan Runner Ambassador for Free to Run, a nonprofit that advances women’s and girls’ rights in conflict-affected regions through running.
I’m inviting you to join me on a run for a cause worth showing up for.
This year marks five years since girls and women in Afghanistan were banned from education and much of public life following the Taliban’s return to power. As part of Free to Run, I’m joining ambassadors around the world in an Underground Runs campaign, informal community runs held to raise awareness and show solidarity with Afghan women who no longer have the freedom to move or exercise their basic rights in public.
I’ll be hosting a 3-mile run on Saturday, August 15, at 10:30 AM, the same date the Taliban took over Afghanistan. We’ll start from my apartment at 100 Franklin Street (Fall Creek) and run to Stewart Park and back. I kept it at 3 miles so it’s welcoming for everyone no matter your pace or experience.
Since this campaign is mostly raising awareness online, I’ll be taking a group picture after our run and wanted to let you know in advance. If you’d like to join, please email me at dh754@cornell.edu.
Thank you for considering it. I’d love to have you for a morning where we run for a cause bigger than ourselves.
Best,
Danish
