Beebe Lake Star Posts

Story

This was going to be my consolation run after a miserable attempt at the sweet 1600 on the Cornell track. But once I got going I decided I might as well give it some speed as I was by myself. Not too bad of an effort.

I do want to warn everyone again to be very careful when crossing Caldwell Road from the Plantations into the Wildflower garden and vice versa. The cars coming down the hill have a STOP sign but the cars coming across the bridge DO NOT STOP. Make sure to slow your run here to be safe crossing.

Enjoy this lovely course!

I ran this course again today, hoping to shave a few minutes off my time, and it felt good to push it.

Everything was lush after a spring rain. The highlights were a pair of goldfinches on Arboretum Road at the top of the climb, and the yellow magnolias nearby. Snapped a pic of the final pink magnolia blossoms (my daughter’s namesake) near the finish.

In an effort to get a last run with @CharlieF in before he decamps for France (and get him on the leaderboard), we met up at the Beebe Lake sign this morning. Before we’d even had a chance to set off, @Bwalters showed up too, so we chatted with him before heading out. Apparently @SarahG saw us crossing Judd Falls Road, and shortly after we finished, Bob came in as well. While we were chatting, @anne-shakespeare and @ruth-sproul appeared, making it a six-Challenger morning. Can’t imagine a nicer start to the day!

Story

After a mile plus on the track, I headed to Judd Falls Rd to start this course by the wildflower garden to the arboretum. My brain/body was on autopilot and missed both turns onto the trails within in the arboretum (see track below).
When I finished, I took a stroll through the rhododendron hill and thought about a dear friend who passed away last year. This person was a ‘lab mom’ when I started my graduate studies and quickly became my friend. Ages ago, she suggested a group of us eat lunch in the rhododendron garden. I had no idea the rhododendrons were there and it was so beautiful! Grateful for the opportunity to spend a few minutes reflecting on our friendship and all the wonderful things she did for me.

As I headed back up the stairs to Judd Falls Rd I saw @adamengst on the course. Apparently, several of us were out there today. Hope you had a nice run fellow Challengers!

Rode in to Teagle to run at High Noon with @JesseKoennecke and @casey, so we picked up the Beebe Lake course below MVR, running the lake loop clockwise and the Arboretum loop counter-clockwise. We got confused briefly about how to follow the trail/field through the Arboretum, which was slightly embarrassing, but things look different in the opposite direction. And on our way back out of the Arboretum, we got to practice our “Cover the ground” greeting to @kristina.harrisonsav, who was heading in the opposite direction.

Is that the official greeting now when we see other FLRC members?

It seems easier than a secret handshake or @CharlieF’s suggestion of wearing brightly colored deely bobbers.

Story

Ran the Beebe lake course over lunch today. Not too many people on the trails but did pass @adamengst and a couple other FLRC members who were doing their own challenge course run. Even though this is my 5th time on the course I still need the run go directions to get to the part along the statue garden. :woman_shrugging:

Ran with Mary, @MDot, and enjoyed the cooler morning temps. We did see some goslings both in Fall Creek and at the edge of the parking lot on Forest Home Drive but they were far enough away that the Mama and Papa geese didn’t threaten us. Beware however of passing geese this time of year down on Beebe Beach, they are capable of being rather vicious when protecting their young.

Today’s run was an adventure. On my way there, I got as far as FH Fox bridge and realized I didn’t have any running shoes with me. Luckily my apartment is not too far away. At the start of my run I was on the phone with my parents and ended up with 2 mini spurs off the course because I was paying attention. The rest of the run went well, and I was feeling good so I just enjoyed my speediness and didn’t stop to take pictures.

I needed a shorter route today, so the Beebe Lake Course fit the bill. I’m happy to report that I made most of the correct turns in the Arboretum. Does anyone else get confused when you navigate
from the start/end sign to Caldwell Rd?! I just weave around various trees.

My thoughts were all over the place today. One thing that consistently bothers me in the Arboretum is on which side of the road are we supposed to run?!? Because cars drive through there, I always stick to the left.

Beautiful morning for a run! The birds were singing, and it was interesting to note how the flora has changed throughout the challenge.

I will eat my afternoon snack for breakfast so that I can head to dairy bar for an afternoon treat.

Official rules agree with common sense and state that runners should run against traffic at all times, so you’re correct in staying on the left side of Arboretum Road. When following the trail, from the sign out to Caldwell Road, the exact route isn’t terribly important (there should be a somewhat more-beaten-down trail), but what is important is that runners must yield to all trees, which have permanent right of way. :evergreen_tree:  :deciduous_tree:

We stayed close to home this morning as we needed to be back to help our daughter out the door. She is driving by herself in our car for a summer internship in Yarmouth Maine. It was a beautiful cool morning and the wild phlox in the arboretum was showing its glory.

Once again, it is the Monday after a Sunday group run and my body is not up for much in the way of running. But the Beebe Lake challenge course is nearby to where I live and beautiful, so once again I walked some of it and ran some of it. I’m really appreciating seeing this course over time, since the plants are always a little bit different.

I did not shop local after running, but I did swim in my pond and then made pad Thai for dinner.

At 11:06, I decided to take a quick break from work to run. I had a phone call at 12:00, but I thought if I were perfectly efficient, I’d have exactly enough time to run Beebe Lake, which is a 6 minute drive away… but I’d have to run it hard. It seemed like a fun challenge!

I quickly changed and left my house at 11:11, arrived at 11:17, scanned the sign at 11:19, ran for 31.5 minutes, scanned the finish sign at 11:51, took 2 minutes to catch my breath and stretch, got back in the car at 11:53, pulled into the driveway at 11:59, just in time for the phone call! Luckily it wasn’t a video call.

For the run itself, I did the lake loop first (thanks @caitlin-loehr for the tip, saving the lovely downhill for last). I took a small extra detour when I thought I was heading onto the trail from the arboretum road, but it was just a path to a bench, but that only added a few seconds.

That upper arboretum road always fools me into thinking “ok, this is the last curve before the big downhill part”… but there always seems to be one more little curve. You think I’d know by now! In any case, I felt good about completing my ridiculously tight timing challenge!

After a complicated workday that was interrupted with a routine medical appointment, it was great to get out for a run. I actually ran the entire course this time, but I stopped several times to take photos and to dictate reminders into my phone. The sky cleared and the humidity dropped while I ran and it actually turned into a nice evening.

We thought we were going to run the Cornell track today, but it was empty and all locked up still at 11:15, so we went over to the Beebe Lake course to run. I stopped by the track again at 12:30 to check it out and it was still locked.

I’ve done Beebe twice. The first time, I had gone running the day before. The second time, I went disco dancing the day before. Apparently, disco dancing enables you to run faster. Just sayin’ next time you want to win a race, go dancing.
