Tompkins Siren issued the following alert today. Looks like we will need to avoid running Fall Creek Trails during this time.
"The NYSDOT Bridge Inspection department has requested Forest Home Drive Bridge (between Judds Falls and Pleasant Grove Roads), in the Town of Ithaca, be temporarily closed for a scheduled NYSDOT Bridge inspection.
The bridge will be closed on Thursday, May 28th from 8:00am to 3:00pm."
@Challengers Well, this is no good. Apparently, the NYS DOT inspection of the Fall Creek bridge found it unsafe for pedestrians. So please don’t run the Fall Creek Trails course that uses it (and if you do, and are caught brazenly running in the roadway, we’re not bailing you out. )
Tompkins SIREN: Due to safety concern identified during a recent NYSDOT inspection, the pedestrian walkway on the Forest Home Lower Bridge is closed effective immediately pending further evaluation and repair.
Pedestrians are prohibited from using the vehicle travel lane to cross the bridge and must use an alternate route.
I agree that such a detour is a good idea, so anyone who wishes to run Fall Creek Trails can do so with this official detour. I’m not quite sure how the distance differs, but it looks pretty similar to me.
Picked up this extra course before heading to volunteer for the FL50s. Saw a whole family of mink! They even let me take some videos. Grateful that it’s a few degrees cooler and cloudy, and sprinkling rain, because it’s still pretty hot and humid. Gorgeous views, and I took a dip at flat rocks afterwards to cool off. Thanks FLRC for another great Saturday morning.
P.s. the instructions are really great this year. But why do the voice instructions say “head and continue” instead of “head straight and continue”? Is it always that way and this is the first year I’ve noticed? Things I wonder about while running…
Muskrat Love
Another beautiful and varied course. Lily pads covering most of the fish pond and some are starting to show blooms. Will be nice to see them.
Trail heading up the hill shortly after crossing the suspension bridge had a few weeds. I reapplied tick repellent before heading through. However, the trail around the field at the top is in need of mowing. I had weeds brushing against me as high as my thighs, and nearly always on my calves. Once you get around the field and make the left onto the grassy road heading to Piglet’s Corner, it’s okay.
The grass around the outside of the horse track was recently mowed. I thought about injecting a couple of laps for a Sweet 1600 here, but several signs say to please stay off the grass.
I spent a little time making sure I followed the detour correctly. Opened up RunGo and it thought I was still on Cornell Scenic Circuit. Took a minute to get that straight. Love how the different Cornell courses mesh.
Spotted a muskrat near the trail over the bridge, just minding his own business eating leaves and grass.
