After hosting a kid sleepover last night I couldn’t make it out for the group run but luckily I ran into @Shanthissv on the trails! Together we took some wrong turns and eventually found our way back. We didn’t mind- it was a gorgeous trail! I had to make some stops for my dog Earl to hydrate so couldn’t finish with her, but it was lovely to meet a new buddy.
Super excited for this year’s challenge
So glad the weather cleared just before the start of the group run!
It was great to see everyone, its been to long
Another Beautiful Cornell Course
I have stopped being surprised by the seemingly never-ending supply of beautiful trails at Cornell. While it was a cloudy, drizzly, early Spring day, I can tell this course is going to be one of my favorites in this year’s Challenge!
I was able to join the kick-off group run, even though the gate off Caldwell Rd was closed and I had a short warm-up run from the small lot on the other side of Caldwell to the start (felt like half a mile). I was surprised that a blue jay on a low branch of a tree I ran right past was undisturbed by my closeness.
It wasn’t far from the start of the group run before I was trailing at the very back - mainly because I was running with my camera, which also conveniently has a phone function. I leapfrogged with Melissa @mplank for a while before dropping back to photograph horses, flowers, and waterfalls. My favorite thing along the course today was the swing at Piglet’s Corner. Otherwise here are a few photos of “Easter” blooms and horses.
I also like that the finish of the course passes that magnificent ancient oak tree I visited on last year’s course. I am looking forward to the progression of the scenery along this route over the course of the spring and summer!
Day 2 of the challenge came back with my Husband for a morning Easter hike, for his first course completion of the year.
Loved showing him all my favorite spots so far and found a cool plant I can’t wait to see bloom.
Also spotted these poor lost items (a trex and some keys) on the trail that I didn’t snag a picture of yesterday. Perhaps we can fine their lost owners. No idea how long they have been there.
So Much Fun!
This has to be the most fun course of the 2025 Challenge - no doubt about it! So much variety and so many interesting things to see! I thought I had pre-photographed it enough during the Group Run on Saturday that I could just run though faster today, but…
Where did these colorful fish come from?
I hit this in the late afternoon and it was so nice to see so many Cornell students out running, from one or two, to what looked like a cross country team, to a pack of about 20 students I tucked in behind along Beebe Lake.
This course is perfect for a pre-work run, and so beautiful right now! Daffodils everywhere and we saw a coyote near Piglet Corner too (~7am). Ran with my friend Christie who gets me up early
I ran this loop this morning for the first time, starting as soon as it was light enough to leave my headlamp in the car. The trail/mixed surface Challenge courses are among my favorite each year, and this one did not disappoint. I enjoyed the mix of scenery, especially when crossing the field past Piglet’s Corner. I’m sure I’ll be back to run this course many times.
I considered RunGo’s suggestion to detour for two loops around the 800-meter horse track to get my 1600 out of the way instead of driving across campus to Schoellkopf. Two workers were already out and about and I wasn’t sure if they’d give me a hard time about it so I decided to move on. Anyone know if that track is available for bipedal ambulation when no quadrupeds are on it?
High Noon has done repeats on the horse track in the distant past, so I’ve always assumed it would be OK if it wasn’t in use by actual horses. It doesn’t look that heavily used most of the time.
Ran this in reverse which somehow seemed less hilly this direction. Is that possible? I have taken a photo of this tree dozens of times over the years. I keep meaning to put them in a slideshow or something, tree through the seasons.
I saw a horse trotting around happily and then it stopped and poop shot out its butt!
Piglet Corner is my favorite place in town. I found it on my last day here in 2007 before moving away. Little did I know I’d soon be back here for good! I’m so glad that so many others get to enjoy it now, too.
This morning was great weather, a little warm by the end, but currently wading at Flat Rock to cool down.
Today’s run kicked off my 2025 Challenge, and was my (fur) baby’s first FLRC course! We’ve been running together for about 6 months now, and Charlie is already proving to be a wonderful trail partner. She’s 14 months old and down for anything (especially water, woods, and wildlife).
When this 65-degree weather proved too warm, they found a mud puddle to cool off in before Charlie gave her new friend’s owner a very muddy kiss on the face.
We refueled at mile 3 (is it love if you don’t share your huma gels??) before I realized I was supposed to be on a zoom call and had to finish the last 2.4 miles of the course while off camera and on mute. Oops!
