Does it matter when you do your SAM (strength and mobility) workouts in relation to your runs? I find that I often do not have time right after a run to do anything other than stretch but that I have time before bed to work on the Jay Johnson routine that we do after track workouts. Am I getting less of a benefit by doing them several hours or more after my run has ended?
A little less, yes, but it’s more important to do it at all than to do it right after the run. Jay explained once that part of the win of doing it right away is that it keeps your heart rate elevated a bit longer, which aids in the cardiovascular conditioning as well. If you wait, you’ll benefit from the strength and mobility aspects, but I suspect you’re less likely to get as much of a cardio boost.
