PGXC #2 2025: Mendon Ponds General Logistics

Hello, @pgxc-flrc and @pgxc-high-noon!

We’ll be racing a 5K on Sunday, 10/5, at Mendon Ponds (Hopkins Pt. Lodge, Pond View Rd, Henrietta, NY 14467), which is not quite a 2-hour drive. (Course map)

To sign up, scroll down on the PGXC Cross-Country Teams page to find links for signing up and adding yourself to the roster. Both are necessary!

Read on for information about the carpool, being at the race, and our post-race afternoon brunch stop, which was a slice of upstate New York autumnal heaven last year.

Carpool

On Sunday, we’ll have our usual carpool routine:

  • The main carpool will leave from the southwest corner of Cornell’s B-lot on Sunday morning (see image below). Plan to arrive at 7:45 AM. Jay Hubisz (@hubitron) will sort people into cars for a departure at 8:00 AM sharp.

  • Adam and Tonya will not be at the B-lot to carpool, but we have room for up to two people on the way back. We will be stopping for lunch on the way back.

At the Race

The race starts at 11 AM, so we suggest you arrive at Mendon Ponds by 10 AM. When you arrive, drop off your gear and find team members at the FLRC tent. Then, pick up your number from the main race organizing table. If you ordered a PGXC shirt, it’s available at bib pickup.

Extra FLRC and High Noon jerseys will be available to sign out at the FLRC tent. (If you will be borrowing a jersey, wear a blue or black shirt that you like for racing in case we don’t have one in your size.) Aim to get to the start line 5–10 minutes before the race so you can join the team cheer and hear announcements. We piloted a new team cheer at PGXC #1, and it seemed to go well, so get ready for some cheering and clapping!

After the Race

When you finish running, cheer for any teammates who are still racing. Do a post-race cooldown jog with others on the team. There will be post-race snacks, provided by the PGXC series, such as bananas, oranges, energy bars, and chips/pretzels.

Approximately half an hour after all runners finish, there will be an awards ceremony for individuals and age-group teams. We’ll pack up and leave after that.

Although I still need to confirm, Adam and I plan to stop for lunch at Brewery Ardennes in Geneva to stretch our legs and relax outside, and we hope to see you there. I’ll post back on the forum once I’ve confirmed this plan – they aren’t open all days of the week, so I couldn’t do it today.

See you on Sunday! —Tonya & Adam

PS. The group run-through of our home PGXC course at Lower Treman will be on Sunday, October 12.

Any of my Cortland area peeps interested in carpooling? @maplejh @HopeT @TB2023 @K8lynmcg

Possibly. Ill see as we get closer.

Hi Tonya,

My hip issue from a couple months ago has made an ill-timed return, preventing me from running Wineglass on Sunday. The silver lining is that I can now run in Sunday’s XC race (5K shouldn’t be a problem). I’ve updated the roster spreadsheet accordingly, though it looks like I’m currently the only one in Super Vets. See you Sunday!

Glad you can join us for a nice, easy race. And yes, more @pgxc-hn-suvets would be good! Casey? Alan? Allan?

I will need a ride with someone..my kids are both working and need our cars for the weekend. I will be super slow on the course sunday but would love to try to go.

Oooph sorry I’m planning to drive up on own because I’m headed for Delaware the next day and not sure of the departure the next morning and what all I’ll need to do beforehand!!!

TB

I can drive.

Our reservation at Brewery Ardennes is confirmed! If you arrive before I do, note that this is for outdoor seating and it is under my name, so you should be able to give them my name and get started even if I’m not the first one there. They also asked that we order in small groups instead of one huge group.

I’ll be driving solo this weekend. I taught my kids too well how to share so now I have their crazy head cold.

I don’t see that stopping me from running a 5k, but I won’t make for pleasant ride sharing buddy.

Thank you,
Geoff

It was stated in the race email that “trail shoes are recommended” for this course. Do we know if that means it’s too rocky for spikes or too slick for road shoes?

The only intel that I could find about the course is that it appears that a large portion of it is on the West Esker Trail. The western loop of that trail is described as following “a long wooded ridge”, so perhaps that section is on the rocky side. The overall trail is also described as moderately hilly. Fun! Fun! Fun!

It’s definitely not too rocky. Based on the map, we’ll spend a decent amount of time in the woods, but most of that surface under the trees is well packed dirt. It’s a little firm with how dry it has been but spikes shouldn’t be a detriment, though I do agree that trail shoes may be a better choice if you have them. The trails in Mendon are quite varied, but this route that they chose is probably also conducive to road shoes. Again, it’s been so dry that nothing is slick at the moment.

There are a few decent climbs, and at least two very steep downhills.

With all of the wide grassy track in Mendon this is a really perplexing choice of course.

Thanks for the input @KimJ and @DamianClemons. I’ll just bring all my options and make a game day decision!
