FLRC Group Run at Kennedy State Forest Saturday, 8/17 @ 9 AM - Monster Marathon and Half Preview!

The next FLRC group run will be this Saturday, August 17, at Kennedy State Forest, and will act as a preview for the Two Hollows Monster Marathon and Half Marathon race coming up on September 1. This is the perfect opportunity to get a feel for the course.

We’ll meet at the corner of Adams Road and Owego Hill Road in the town of Harford, NY (do not attempt to approach via Owego Hill Road from the north) at 9 AM and start running at 9:15 AM. Race directors will lead groups looking to complete the full 13.1-mile course or shorter distances based on completing the out and back loops in different ways (10 miles and 6.5 miles are also options). We will pass the start/finish where the cars are parked at 6.5 or 10 miles for anyone wishing to resupply or call it a day at that point. There will be post-run snacks available!

RunGo directions are available, so if you’re not running with someone who is 100% familiar with the trails, please use them. You can view them online and download them to the RunGo app on your smartphone or Apple Watch. Search for Two Hollows Monster.

Register for Two Hollows Monster Marathon and Half Marathon!

Please do so before August 21 to avoid a $31 price hike, and so the race directors have the proper amount of food, finisher awards, and so forth on hand on race day. Also, we can always use volunteers for race day, so check out the Helper Helper opportunities and sign up today.

Note that the early morning setup volunteer slots will still allow you to run the half marathon race, if that works for you, and thanks so much! The trail Monster position (1 or 2 people!) is still open!

Please vote in the poll below by indicating your anticipated road-running pace so others can get a sense of who else will be running their pace. We always have a wide range of runners, so you’ll generally find someone to run with.

Everyone is welcome, regardless of age, ability, pace, or anything else. This is a free activity and club membership is not required, but please sign the waiver before your first run this year. You only need to sign the waiver once for all 2024 group runs, so if you’ve already signed it, you’re all set! (Check Webscorer to verify that you signed.)

Let’s try to reduce the number of car trips to fight climate change. Vote if you need a ride or can give one, and post a reply below with meetup ideas.

Does anyone have a .gpx file please?

It’s a premium feature from RunGo.

  • Go to the Monster FLRC website
  • Scroll down to the Course Map section
  • In the Plotaroute window, click/hover over on the hamburger menu and then select the download option
  • The screen will change allowing you to download a .gpx file

Thanks!!

I created that file (https://routes.rungoapp.com/route/NKY5vTHKUP), but am also a lowly user so don’t have access to the RunGo GPX either. I can say, though, that the directions work well and, importantly, clue you into the color changes of the blazes as you progress through the course.
Have a good run and hope to see you on race day (Sun, Sep 1), too.

The club account is a premium account, so I can download the GPX. Here you go.

Perfect, thanks Adam.

Just a last heads up, unless there is some sort of (really) dangerous weather alert, we are running rain or shine tomorrow – of course no pressure if you don’t want to run, but Steve J. and I will be there. We will probably have two groups to allow us to accommodate different paces. there is a lot of picking up your feet and twists and turns on the course, so it’s best to take is slow the first time if you need to.

See you all soon!

10 trail runners came out on a beautiful morning - cool & no rain - to run the Monster Marathon course. Good times were had by all. You may notice that there are only 8 in the photo – by the time the photo was taken, @nkleinrock had already left to hike the course. @stephen-jesch served as official photographer!
